Project Goals

The students' investigation during the programming process revealed overlapping interests among major sectors, as shown in this chart:

City Schools University Parks
Encourage community involvement Improve parental involvement Engage in a sustainable partnership with the Tukwila School District
Encourage community pride through awareness of ecology, history, and culture Promote Tukwila as a "good place for kids" Develop students' capacities for interdisciplinary collaboration

Develop students' community problem-solving and environmental reclamation skills

Development student' abilities to identify and utilize community assets

Improve the landscape; enhance visual and physical linkages Improve children's academic performance Advance professional education in art, architecture, landscape architecture, urban design and planning Achieve certification as a wildlife habitat community

By weaving together the separate interests of various stakeholders, the following shared goals for the project were articulated:

  • Engage Tukwila children and their families as partners with university faculty and students to improve Tukwila's outdoor environment

  • Design outdoor spaces that promote children's development and make learning fun

  • Design outdoor spaces that help connect the city's physical and social fabric, while linking schools to their surrounding communities

  • Design outdoor spaces that help restore the city's ecology and make visible its history and culture

  • Create "big ideas" that require long-range planning, as well as "easy wins" that can be constructed in the near future by Tukwila's school community

  • Lay the foundation for an ongoing relationship with Tukwila.
