GROUP NAME: THORNTON CREEK
PROJECT
GOALS:
- The Projects goal is to provide a
resource and support network for educators to help them teach
their students to become knowledgeable, skilled, and involved
citizens of the community.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
- There are thirty-five schools in the
watershed that are involved in the project. Partners in the
Project include Seattle Public Schools, Independent schools, North
Seattle Community College, City of Seattle, King County, US
Environmental Protection Agency, Alley Chevrolet and other local
businesses, and Thornton Creek Alliance.
- They have raised public awareness and
educated students of all ages about the local ecology of Thornton
Creek.
ACTIVITIES:
- The organization is a non-advocacy group
that uses Thornton Creek Watershed as a basis for teaching these
skills. The curriculum for K-12 sponsored by the Project meets the
requirements of national and state standards. These projects
include school-based research, monitoring, and restoration
projects.
- They maintain the Thornton Creek Watershed
Community Library that provides information concerning the
watershed that encourages the use and sharing of knowledge by
members of all sectors of the community.
IMPACT:
- They have increased public awareness of
Thornton Creek and their library is a resource for information on
Thornton Creek. They have provided curriculums for educating
students about Thornton Creek.
