  Creating Symmetrical Drawings

Illustrator allows you to quickly create drawings that are symmetrical by "reflecting" a given line segment.
Select the portion of the artwork you wish to reflect, and then select the reflect tool from the toolbox. Like all transformation tools the reflect tool reacts in relation to some fixed point on or around an object. This fixed point is called the origin of transformation, and it is marked on the page by a bull's eye icon.
Hold the option key down as you select the origin of transformation on the page. This will open the reflect dialogue box.
In the reflect dialogue box select the direction of reflection and then choose OK to simply reflect the path, or select copy to produce two mirror images.

Creating Basic Shapes

Illustrator makes it easy to draw, edit, and combine basic shapes.

The shape making tools are found with toolbox.

To create a basic shape:
Select a shape making tool and click where you want the shape to originate on the page and then drag until the shape is the desired size.
