Sketchbook Portfolio Delivery

Photocopies of all your sketchbook problems,
clearly labeled and stapled at the top corner.

Due Wednesday, June 11 in my box in 208 Gould Hall.

Project 1: Typography and Drawing

Select a piece of architectural writing that has influenced you or could potentially influence your work on the upcoming studio project. It can be any length, but a piece that is a paragraph or two will allow you to explore a wider range of typographic conventions.

You will be combining this text with scans of your pen and ink drawings from yournew site. The focus of this exercise is looking at the use of page design and the vocabulary used in designing the relationship between text and images. We will be looking at the way you present the text and image to create a clear sense of hierarchy and meaning.

Your final piece will be an 11x17 page composed of between one and five drawings and your text.

Project 2: Spatial Sequence

Using your current design project concept, design a spatial sequence of three to four drawings that moves us through your site and into your building. You will begin with three dimensional renderings and work with them in Photoshop to create a convincing spatial sequence utilizing the body, conventions of perspective, and the editing vocabulary of drawing (erasure/layering/abstraction) . You will experiment with including diagrammatic/schematic and material elements in the drawings.

Your final piece will be a series of 300 ppi images plotted at the size of your choice on a single sheet.

Project 3: Light

Using your current design, we will use photoshop and three dimensional renderings to explore expression of light conditions. You will choose an exterior and interior view of your design and develop the perspective with visually convincing and accurate lighting.

Your final piece will be two 300 ppi images plotted in color on a photographic paper.

Project 4: Site Section

Using your current design, express the tectonic character of your design through a site section. You will develop a piece in Photoshop and Illustrator, utilizing both vector and raster elements, that expresses your design through choice of materiality, scale, volumetric expression, and site conditions.

Your final piece will be a plot of the site section at 1’: 1/8”  or 1’ : 1/4” scale.
