Content: A Week-by-Week Analysis of the Course

Week 1 & 2:

The first week of the quarter will introduce you to the computer resources within the college. Additionally, we will talk a lot about methods for storing your digital work, including managing the computing resources provided to you by the UW. You'll learn digital file fundamentals, e.g., what's a .jpg, when to use a .tif, etc. Please review the Digital File Sheet and File Type documents located on this website's Resources page. If you are new to computing it would be wise to review the material contained within the Other section of the tutorials. If you have not already done so, it is highly recommended that you explore the 440 web site. We will continue to update it throughout the quarter with useful information.

Now we'll begin with 3-dimensional representation. We'll start with a quick introduction to GIS, gathering data and exporting for use with Sketchup. You should complete the SketchUp tutorial by Wednesday. Then we'll learn to integrate GIS topographical and other data into Sketchup to build a 3-dimensional model and how to integrate it with other software.

   
Week 3 & 4:

Week 3 is short due to the holiday on Monday.

Week 4, we begin our exploration of Photoshop. To prepare, you should complete the Photoshop tutorial from the Tutorials section. This software package is designed to work with raster data.This section starts with an introduction to image acquisition through the processes of scanning and digital photography. We begin by covering the basics of selecting, layer management, etc. The goal for this week is to become familiar with the Photoshop environment.

Week 5 & 6:

Week 5, welcome to Illustrator! This section will be devoted to exploring Illustrator and its multiple uses. You should try to complete the tutorial in order to make the most of the in-class help sessions. We will cover the basics of Illustrator, graphic elment development, text and how to use Photoshop images in Illustrator.

Week 6, This week we introduce you to Adobe InDesign, an excellent program for working on layouts.You should complete the tutorial for InDesign. The goals for this section are to provide you with the tools to help you develop presentation and studio boards brining elements you've created in Photoshop, Illustrator and Sketchup into InDesign for the final layout.

Week 7:

Week 7, another short week due to the holiday. Wednesday will be a short discussion and example session talking about Board Layout and Graphic Presentation. Through looking at examples and discussing techniques, you will learn how to compose project boards that clearly convey your concept and design. Topics include: color, space, hierarchy, lineweight, flow, legibility, etc.

Week 8 & 9:

Week 8, is a suprise. We intend to teach you something really cool here.

Week 9 is a work week. Come in with your questions, problems, and ideas.

Week 10 & 11:

On Monday, you'll turn in your final assignment! Have no fear, this assignment is one that you can also use with your final Studio project! Monday, will be the last day of class in which we will be around to help out with you final studio projects or any questions you might have on the software covered. Class will not meet after that!!
