Transferring files over a network is an essential skill you should have. Electronic file transfer is useful when you want to send a file to someone without having to send that file on a disk or any other physical medium.

Here's a conceptual diagram of how the process works:

 
 
If you wanted to send a file electronically to someone else, you would begin by transferring the file to your email account (Dante for UW users). Then, you attach that file to an email message. When the receiver gets the email, s/he saves the attachment in his/her email account and then transfers it to a local disk for permanent storage. This tutorial will teach you how to do this.
