Creating new layers
You don't have to depend on Photoshop to create new layers for you; you can do it yourself. To create a new layer, do the following:

  • click the "layer options" button in the Layers palette (circled in figure below)
  • click on New Layer.
  • The dialogue box that appears gives you a chance to name your layer. This name will show up in the Layers palette. If you're working with lots of layers in a complex image, it's a good idea to give your layers descriptive names to distinguish them from the rest.
  • If at any time you want to rename a layer, just double-click on it in the Layers palette, and the same dialogue box will reappear.

The same "layer options" button can also be used to delete layers you don't want and to make duplicate copies of layers; just click on the appropriate option.
