In January 2002, UW BaSiC sponsored a design/build trip to Auroville, India. About 30 students, mostly University of Washington graduates and undergraduates, travelled to the township, created in the 1960s as an intentional international community. They built the first structure in Auroville's American Pavilion area, a dormitory building. The focus of this project was the integration of sustainable building practices into the context of Auroville's community, a community strongly dedicated to exploring issues in sustainability.
